At BYEI, we’re delighted to announce the 2024 Cohort of the Earth Champions Program (ECP) Fellowship, our signature youth environmental stewardship program to develop the next generation of climate and environmental stewards. This year, ECP received an overwhelming 1,300+ applications from 224 academic institutions spanning all eight divisions of Bangladesh. After shortlisting the application, we called about 100+ individuals for an interview. Out of these exceptional applications, 31 fellows (13 female and 18 male) have been selected, pulling an acceptance rate of close to 2%. These fellows represent 24 academic institutions from across the country.
The ECP 2024 fellows represent a rich diversity of academic disciplines, regions, and life experiences with a shared passion for environmental stewardship shaped by their lived experiences. This year, special attention was given to ensuring representation from rural areas, vulnerable and climate-affected communities, reflecting the program’s commitment to inclusivity. The cohort comprises 42% female and 58% male participants, creating a gender balance and empowering underrepresented voices in environmental leadership.

Since its inception in 2011, the ECP has been training youth leaders to address climate and environmental challenges in their communities. As for this year’s cohort, they will begin on a year-long journey that starts with a 5-day residential Earth Camp. The camp will focus on critical environmental discourses surrounding environmental justice, planetary stewardship, and sustainable development, while equipping fellows with systems thinking and design thinking methodologies. Following the Earth Camp, the fellows will implement Environmental Action Projects (EAPs) through Earth Clubs established in their respective institutions. These clubs will act as hubs for environmental advocacy, activism, and collaboration within their communities. BYEI and its partners will provide mentorship and support to ensure the success of 5-8 impactful and sustainable action projects.
The ECP is BYEI’s flagship initiative, dedicated to nurturing Bangladesh’s next generation of environmental leaders. It aims to equip young changemakers with the knowledge, tools, and networks needed to tackle complex environmental issues and create a sustainable future.
The 2024 program is supported the Roots (powered by Greenpeace Organization) and Oxfam in Bangladesh, who share a commitment to building a just, resilient, and environmentally conscious generation.
